Tuberculosis drug development forum

18-19 Aug 2010. Tuberculosis (TB) drug developers, care providers, public health policy-makers and community advocates come together for an open forum on the state of TB drug development with a special focus on Africa. The programme includes special sessions on the current global TB drug development portfolio, drug registration and trials and challenges in TB drug development for resistant disease among other issues. The forum is organised by the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (TB Alliance), a non-profit partnership promoting the discovery and development of faster-acting and more affordable drugs to fight TB. It is part of the Stop TB Partnership, an international network established in 2000 with the aim of eliminating the potentially fatal infectious disease. more

19 June 2010. The Alliance Ethio-Française presents a musical line-up to mark the annual Fête de la Musique, or World Music Day, on 21 June, which was first celebrated in France in 1982. The afternoon line-up includes French duo Bastoon and Babouscka with Ethiopian guests and songs in Amharic, and singer-songwriter Bohbi FM from Ivory Coast. Entrance free. more

The annual European Film Festival presents a programme of indoor and outdoor film screenings at the Alliance Ethio-Française, the Goethe-Institut, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Matti Multiplex cinema at Edna Mall opposite Bole Medhanealem Church. As of the end of April full programme details had not been released, but the French contribution will be the 2006 movie Coeurs by Alain Resnais, a comedy about seven lonely hearts in Paris whose lives intertwine, on 15 May at Edna Mall cinema at 20.30. more

11 May-26 June 2010. Foreign cultural institutes in Addis Ababa host a series of events on 11 May dedicated to the relationship between European and Ethiopian fashion. The programme opens at the British Council at 12.00 with a lunchtime panel discussion on Promoting Ethiopian Fashion in Europe, with participation from Ethiopian designers. This is followed by a workshop on fashion and cinema with fashion expert Philippe Pourhashemi at the Goethe-Institut from 16.00-18.00; and by an illustrated talk on African influences on European fashion, also by Pourhashemi, at the Alliance Ethio-Française at 20.00. Finally on 26 June there is the EU fashion competition at the Alliance Ethio-Française from 15.00, when aspiring and emerging designers can present their work to an independent jury. The programme follows on from the Renaissance workshop and fashion show on 8 May with German fashion house Markus Lupfer and Ras Africa creator Osman Mohammed (see What’s on in Addis Ababa below). more

6 May-8 June 2010. The Alliance Ethio-Française presents two Ethiopian films as part of its ongoing programme Ethio-Cinéma. The first is Melak by Eskender Ali, about a singer called Mesay who abandons a promising career in Addis Ababa to search for his missing son (6 May at 20.00). The second is The 15-minute Operation by Tilahun Tafere, which tells the true story of an operation carried out in 1986 by a commando of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front to free political prisoners from the high-security Mekelle prison, which was then under the control of the military Derg (8 June, 20.30). more

25 April - 8 May 2010. In collaboration with Moplaco Trading, Goethe-Institut presents 'Renaissance Fashion Show' with German fashion house Markus Lupfer. The fashion show takes place at 20.00 on 8 May at Moplaco Coffee Warehouse, Gerji, but is preceded by a two week workshop guided by designer Osman Mohammed of Ras Africa, as well as emerging Ethiopian designers. The event has been organised with the cooperation of Subsaharan Informer and Muffathalle Munich, What’s Out! Addis, EU Delegation and Alliance Ethio-Française. Complimentary passes are available at Limeetree coffee shop, Bole Rd, on 24 April and 7 May (10.00-16.00) and the Goethe-Institut from 29 April to 7 May (09.00-17.00). more

13-26 April 2010. Joint exhibition of work by two prestigious Ethiopian artists, Mickael Bethe Selassie and Konjit Seyoum. Born in 1951 in Dire Dawa, Selassie is known for his sculptures and reliefs in paper mache and his paintings in acrylic and he has work in museum collections all over the world. He is based in Paris but is well known in Ethiopia, where he has held several solo shows and led two art workshops at the Alliance Ethio-Francaise. Konjit Seyoum is an art curator and artist and the founder of the popular Asni Gallery in Addis Ababa. She is best known for her installation work. Mon-Fri 12.00-18.00, Sat 09.30-12.00, 14.00-18.00. This exhibition at the National Museum explores the aesthetic world of the Mursi nomadic cattle herders living in the Omo Valley, with a special focus on the role played by colours and body ornaments in the daily life of this group. The display is based on an anthropological study by the French ethnologist Jean-Baptist Eczet and includes texts, photographs and video. Opening 17 March at 18.30. Entry free. more
