Tourism: Timeshare resort opens on Lake Langano in Ethiopia

Saturday, January 16th 2010

Lake Langano 200 km south of Addis Ababa is the site of a new timeshare resort, the first of its kind in Ethiopia.

The complex has been developed by the Africa Vacation Club Ethiopia at a cost of 35 million birr. Construction took four years due to delays as a result of currency shortages and difficulties in securing building materials such as cement among other things.

The resort uses the standard timeshare system whereby each client “buys” the right to access a property for one week a year, although there are a few single-ownership villas available for purchase as well. It began accepting guests on 1 January while the official inauguration will take place in a few months time.

Africa Vacation Club Ethiopia opened at the Dembel City Centre on Bole Road in Addis Ababa in 2004 and, according to its website, it also has plans to open a vacation resort in Piazza in the capital. It comes under the auspices of the South Africa-based holding company Africa Vacation Club, which has operations in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Lake Langano is a popular holiday destination for tourists and city dwellers due to its birdlife and wildlife and the fact that the water is free from the parasites that cause the disease Bilharzia, a rarity for freshwater lakes in many parts of Africa.
