Accommodation: Low-cost housing in Addis Ababa centre
Tuesday, February 9th 2010Addis Ababa city council has announced plans to demolish part of the city centre and build low-cost condominium housing in its place.
The English-language business weekly Capital Ethiopia reports that the areas earmarked for demolition include parts of Arada sub-city, around the very central Piazza commercial area and Arat Kilo, home to some of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the city, and the stretch of Haile Gebre Selassie Avenue leading east off Meskel Square towards Caramara Bridge.
The plans are part of efforts by the city council to eliminate Addis Ababa’s sprawling shanty towns and replace them with blocks of flats that are affordable to low-income residents.
Capital says the city has begun work on 18,000 low-cost homes since the start of the 2009/2010 budget year. The work has led to the demolition of 6,000 houses in the Lideta and Teklehaimanot districts respectively southwest and south of the Piazza area.
